Oak Terrace Chess Club 2023-2024

Scholastic chess has enjoyed explosive growth in recent years and has shed its reputation as a game only for intellectuals. Beyond the sheer pleasure of playing, studies have shown that chess improves academic performance, concentration, logical thinking, and social skills.

Oak Terrace Chess Club is coordinated by a group of parent volunteers and is coached by experienced players in middle school and high school. The club will meet once a week through the academic year on Friday afternoons, from 3:20 to 4:45 pm in the Oak Terrace Library. It runs all three trimesters beginning on Friday, September 22nd and ending on May 17th. Although you register at the beginning of the year for the entire year and members are encouraged to attend all year, it is not a requirement to attend all year, or to attend every session. Additionally, members may leave early if needed. Attendance will be taken and parents are asked to specify in writing any variations from full-time attendance. The sessions start with free play, followed by 45-minute lessons at the player’s level. Sets and boards are provided. Members may bring nut-free snacks to eat before the club starts.

The club ranks members according to their wins and losses, and maintains an incentive system rewarding members for participating in lessons. Club members who are ready will be encouraged to attend local and statewide tournaments. As Oak Terrace is the only elementary school in District 112 that currently has an active chess club, we are working to schedule a tournament with clubs in other districts. The club will host its own internal tournament and end of year party.

Parental involvement is encouraged whether or not you play chess. We request that you help keep the club running by volunteering to attend at least one session, to set up, monitor classes, and clean up. No chess experience is required.
